- If taking picture of more than 1 food, separate food items by commas
- If eating from a restaurant chain (i.e. McDonald’s, Burger King), enter the restaurant name in front of the first food item (Mcdonald’s quarter pounder with cheese, large fries)
- Enter small, medium, large, etc when it seems appropriate (drinks/smoothies etc.)
- When eating a food you have previously stored a food into PhotoCalorie, use the “My Food” tab for quicker journal entry.
Estimating Serving Size
Use these practical methods to get a good estimate of how many servings you are eating:
1 Serving descriptions for various food categories:
Meat:
3-4 oz: the size and thickness of a deck of playing cards / the palm of your hand
Fruit:
1 whole fruit about size of medium apple, peach or tennis ball.
If large fruit or small fruits (i.e. pineapples or grapes), amount that would fit into 1 cup
Cheese:
Couple slices or 1 oz, about the size of 4 stacked dice
Ice cream:
½ cup or size of a tennis ball
Mixed Veggies, pasta, mashed potatoes, rice etc.:
1 cup or about the size of a fist
Butter, margarine, Olive oil:
1 tablespoon or size of large soup spoon.
Nuts, seeds, candy:
1 ounce or one handful
Peanut Butter:
2 tablespoons or about 2 large soup spoons full
Fluids (milk, juice, soda, soup etc.):
8 oz. / 1 cup or about the size of a fist.
Eggs:
One egg.
For scrambled eggs, or omlette about 2 eggs
